How to offer gift wrapping on Shopify product pages

Gift wrap is one of the easiest ways to raise order value, and one of the fiddliest things to set up on Shopify. These are the common approaches, from free to fully automatic.

1. Free: a gift message field

If you wrap for free and only need the message, a line item property is enough. It saves the message on the order next to the item it belongs to.

In the theme editor, open a product page, add a Custom Liquid block to the product information section and paste this in. The form attribute ties the field to the Add to cart form, so the answer is sent with the product. This works on Dawn and most current Shopify themes; if your theme names its product form differently, the field will appear but its answer will not reach the cart.

2. Charge with a gift wrap product

Many stores create a product called Gift wrap and ask customers to add it to the cart. It is free to set up, but nothing ties the wrap to the item it is for, customers forget to add it, and it shows up in your catalog and search results unless you hide it.

3. Charge on the product page

To charge for wrap as a checkbox on the product itself, you need an app, because Shopify themes cannot change a price from a checkbox on their own. Look for one that ties the charge to the item, so the order shows which item to wrap and with which message.
